This October, Mallorca will become the epicenter of the conversation on sustainability in the audiovisual sector, hosting renowned European experts who will share their insights at the Green Film Forum, an initiative by the Fundació Mallorca Turisme and the Mallorca Film Commission. The event, taking place from October 18th to 20th, offers attendees a unique opportunity to explore the latest green trends and innovations applied to the audiovisual industry.
Key Sessions and Their Experts
Birgit Heidsiek, founder of Green Film Shooting and sustainability consultant, will open the forum with a masterclass in dialogue with Pedro Barbadillo, director of the Mallorca Film Commission. Birgit is widely recognized for her tireless work in sustainability within audiovisual production and has been a pioneer in creating tools for the operation of green cinemas across Europe.
On Saturday, October 19th, the day will kick off with the session “Greening Film Festivals & Cinemas,” moderated by Javier Pachón, a local leader of CineCiutat. Teresa Morales de Álava, director of the Punto de Vista festival, will share her experience on how festivals can lead the shift towards more eco-friendly practices, addressing the transition of festivals towards a smaller environmental footprint.
Innovation will take center stage in the next session, moderated by Alba Meijide, an expert in artificial intelligence applied to various sectors, including audiovisual production. Figures such as Mike Zimmermann from Lichthaus and Tom Henderson, founder of The Vectar Project, will explore how new technologies are helping reduce the environmental impact of film productions, such as Vectar Sets, a system for low-carbon set construction.
The afternoon will continue with the session “It is on Us: The People Who Make It Possible,” moderated by Diana de la Cuadra. Alissa Aubenque, Chief Operating Officer of Ecoprod, will address how day-to-day work in audiovisual productions can become more environmentally friendly. Alissa leads key initiatives to integrate sustainability into every stage of audiovisual production. As a producer at Calista Films, she pioneers the creation of narratives that inspire a more sustainable and desirable future.
One of the forum’s most important moments will be the roundtable on creating common guidelines for green filming, moderated by Paloma Urrutia, founder of Mrs. Greenfilm. Paloma has been instrumental in raising awareness about sustainability in the sector. This session will feature Luca Ferrario, creator of the Green Film certification, and Christiane Scholz from the Hamburg Film Commission, both of whom have driven significant changes across Europe to encourage more productions to adopt eco-friendly practices.
On Sunday, October 20th, the final session will focus on funding sustainability in the audiovisual sector, with speakers like Lucía Recalde, head of unit at the European Commission, Fernando Bigeriego from the ICAA, and Benjamin Vanhagendoren from Wallimage, Belgium. These experts will explain the key aspects of obtaining financial support for sustainable projects— a crucial topic for any producer committed to implementing greener practices.
