Premiering at the Málaga Film Festival in 2020, this film has trailblazed as the first carbon-neutral production in the film industry.
Filmed between 2018 and 2019 on the island of Ibiza, formerly known as Ibosim, this eco-sustainable production focused not only on the story it tells but also on how it was made. Every detail, from planning to post-production, was meticulously designed to minimize its environmental impact.
A key element of this project was the efficient management of resources. The electricity used during filming came from renewable sources, and technologies were implemented to reduce water consumption. Additionally, the production team made a conscious effort to cut CO2 emissions by using electric vehicles and organizing shared transportation for the cast and crew.
The commitment to sustainability extended to other areas as well, such as catering, which featured organic and local foods, and wardrobe, which consisted of second-hand clothing and rented outfits. Even in the film’s narrative, the characters’ everyday actions reflect a sustainable approach, such as a scene where a couple sorts waste instead of engaging in more traditional on-screen activities.
This comprehensive approach wouldn’t have been possible without a team dedicated to the cause. From the director to the actors, everyone shared the vision of using cinema as a tool for change. As Miguel Ángel Tobías puts it, “caring for the environment is caring for ourselves,” and El Secreto de Ibosim demonstrates this in every frame.
With its carbon-neutral certification, this film has set a benchmark for future productions aiming to be planet-conscious.Learn more about this project here.
